AIMS

• To make trainees competent to teach English as a foreign language with a multitude of different techniques.
• To make participants feel perfectly comfortable about teaching English communicatively.
• To give the trainees the tools to plan units of work effectively and learn how to teach other subjects through the medium of English.
• To bring students safely up to F.C.E. level.

TARGET STUDENTS

• Students with a level of English close to F.C.E. or higher.
• N.B. This course is also offered in schools to 3rd year of Prepa students whose level of English is close to F.C.E.or higher.

ENGLISH FOR TEACHERS COURSE

Duration 60 hours

AIMS

• This course aims at providing an incentive for teachers of English to improve their language proficiency for personal and professional development as well as reach the language standards required by the University of Cambridge to take the COTE course. Successful participants in this course will be given an ANGLIA certificate.

TARGET STUDENTS

• Non-native teachers of English at the primary, secondary, preparatory or higher levels.

COURSE CONTENT

The content of the course will put emphasis on the specific needs of the participants covering the following topic areas.

1. Interacting with peers (develop the ability to discuss and comment on teaching issues).
2. Reading and understanding T.E.F.L. Texts with the following purposes: reading for gist, reading for detail, by means of glossing, note-taking, summarizing etc.
3. Writing connected prose on topics relevant to the teacher's roles, e.g. notices, instructions, letters, testimonials, etc.
4. Reading phonemic script to improve pronunciation skills.
5. Analyzing authentic students' texts, recognizing and reporting on errors and reporting on errors and rewriting them appropriately.
6. Language and grammar analysis for teaching purposes.
7. Classroom and management language: reading aloud, giving instructions, etc.
8. Listening to and understanding T.E.F.L. material (videos, lectures etc.).

• The reading skill: Different types of reading, developing reading strategies, reading tasks etc.
• The writing skill: Contrasting written and spoken language, different types of writing activities, ways of developing and improving writing strategies, way of giving feedback, etc.
• Integrating skills and lesson planning: Strategies to ensure well balanced lessons.

REFRESHER COURSE

• To help teachers improve and bring up to date their practical teachings skills in the classroom for personal and professional development.

TARGET STUDENTS

• This course is intended for practicing teachers teaching at the children, adolescents or adults levels.

TKT (TEACHING KNOWLEDGE TEST)

DURATION: 90 HOURS (On a regular, intensive or modular basis)

What is TKT?

TKT is a new test about teaching English to speakers of other languages. It aims to increase teachers' confidence and enhance job prospects by focusing on the core teaching knowledge needed by teachers of primary, secondary or adult learners, anywhere in the world. This flexible and accessible award will help you to understand:

• different methodologies for teaching
• the 'language of teaching'
• the ways in which resources can be used
• the key aspects of lesson planning
• classroom management methods for different needs.

Who is TKT for?

TKT gives teachers a strong foundation in the core areas of teaching knowledge needed in the English language teaching classroom. It is ideal for all teachers, whatever your background and teaching experience, and is also suitable for people who would like to teach English but do not yet have a teaching position.

There are no formal entry requirements. However, anyone wishing to take TKT is strongly advised to have at least an intermediate level of English - level B1 of the Council of Europe's Common European Framework of Reference for Languages - eg PET, IELTS band score of 4.

After taking TKT, teachers who want to develop their knowledge further can progress to Cambridge ESOL's well-established teaching awards, such as ICELT (In-service Certificate in English Language Teaching) and CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults).

Most teachers are likely to follow a preparation course before taking the test.
